Honolulu is the capital city of Hawaii, the 50th U.S. state. It’s located on the southeastern coast of the island of Oahu. It’s the most populous city in Hawaii and serves as the main gateway to the Hawaiian Islands. It’s also a major hub for international business, military defense, as well as famously being host to a diverse variety of east-west and Pacific cultures, cuisine, and traditions.
Honolulu is probably best known for its district of Waikiki, a neighborhood of Honolulu, where the sport of surfing was popularized by Duke Kahanamoku, an Olympic gold medalist in swimming. Waikiki is a popular tourist destination with its beautiful stretch of beach and various entertainments.
Also in Honolulu is the historic Pearl Harbor, the site of the surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service against the United States on the morning of December 7, 1941. The attack led to the United States’ formal entry into World War II the next day with a declaration of war against Japan. Today, the harbor is home to several historical sites, including the USS Arizona Memorial, which commemorates the soldiers and sailors who died during the attack.
The city is also a center for Hawaiian music and has a thriving arts scene with numerous galleries, museums, and performance venues. The Bishop Museum, the largest of Honolulu’s museums, is the premier natural and cultural history institution in the Pacific. It’s recognized throughout the world for its cultural collections, research projects, public education programs, and Native Hawaiian artifacts.
Honolulu’s climate is tropical, with temperatures ranging from warm in the winter to hot in the summer, and with a fairly constant humidity level.
In terms of education, Honolulu is home to the University of Hawaii, which includes three of the ten University of Hawaii system campuses.
Despite its many urban attractions, Honolulu is surrounded by nature. The Diamond Head, an extinct volcanic crater, and the Hanauma Bay, a popular snorkeling spot with a diverse marine ecosystem, are notable natural landmarks.
