Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. Booth was a Confederate sympathizer and an actor, and he shot Lincoln at Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C. on the evening of April 14, 1865. Lincoln was attending a play titled “Our American Cousin” at the time of the assassination. He was taken across the street to the Petersen House where he died the next morning. John Wilkes Booth was later found and killed by Union soldiers on April 26, 1865.
