The very first home video game console is considered to be the Magnavox Odyssey, which was first released in 1972. It was designed by Ralph Baer, who is often referred to as the “Father of Video Games.” The console was quite basic by today’s standards. It didn’t have sound output and displayed very minimal graphics. However, the Magnavox Odyssey laid the groundwork for the home video game industry and was a precursor to more advanced systems such as the Atari 2600.
