With a total height of 979 meters (3,212 feet) and an uninterrupted drop of 807 meters (2,648 feet), Angel Falls is over twice the height of the Empire State Building and 15 times the height of Niagara Falls. The water’s long descent from the top of the Auyán-tepui mountain in the park gives it ample time to be vaporized into mist before it reaches the ground, creating a majestic spectacle that is unparalleled in its grandeur.
The falls are named after Jimmy Angel, an American aviator and adventurer. Angel discovered the falls in 1933 while searching for a gold ore bed. He later returned in 1937 with his wife and their friend Gustavo Heny. Unfortunately, their plane was damaged upon landing, and the trio had to descend the tepui on foot, an arduous journey that took them 11 days.
Due to its remote location in the tropical rainforest, Angel Falls is not the most accessible tourist destination. The falls are typically reached by a combination of a flight, a river trip, and a trek through the jungle.
