Question: The first electronic programmable computer built in the U.S was called ENIAC. What does ENIAC stand for?

Show answer

Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer.

ENIAC stands for “Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer”. It was developed during World War II (between 1943 and 1945) by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania. It was designed to calculate artillery firing tables for the United States Army’s Ballistic Research Laboratory, but its first use was in calculations for the hydrogen bomb. Despite being over 1,000 times faster than any existing computing device at the time, by today’s standards, ENIAC was incredibly slow, large, and cumbersome. However, it laid the groundwork for future developments in electronic computing.
