The history of the Four Corners region is rich and varied, extending far beyond its modern establishment as a boundary intersection. Long before European settlers reached this part of North America, the land was inhabited by Indigenous peoples, including the Ancestral Puebloans, known for their sophisticated architecture and cliff dwellings. Later, the Navajo and Ute peoples settled in the region, and their reservations now encompass parts of the Four Corners.
The actual demarcation of the Four Corners dates back to the 19th century. As the U.S. expanded westward, territorial disputes arose and required resolution. Surveys were conducted to delineate territories and future state boundaries. The initial marker was placed at the Four Corners in 1868 following the initial surveys. Over the subsequent years, additional surveys were conducted to confirm and adjust the boundaries. It wasn’t until 1925 that a more permanent marker was installed at the site, which has since been replaced and updated.
Today, the Four Corners Monument features a bronze disk embedded in granite, clearly indicating the dividing lines between the four states. Visitors often take the opportunity to stand or lie down on the marker, placing their limbs in four states simultaneously. Surrounding the marker, there are also stalls operated by Navajo and Ute artisans, showcasing and selling traditional crafts and goods.
Though remote – it’s situated in a desert region with vast landscapes and dramatic vistas – the monument draws thousands of visitors annually. It’s a testament not only to the allure of geographic oddities but also to the rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and natural wonders that the Four Corners region holds.
